Babar Azam has faced ongoing criticism for his T20 strike rate, with detractors arguing it lacks the aggression needed in modern T20 cricket. In response, Babar has defended his approach, emphasizing situational awareness and his unique batting style.
In a recent statement reported by Geo Super, he said, “I know that nowadays there’s a lot of talk about strike rate and aggressive batting. I understand where cricket is heading and I don’t need to prove what kind of player I am, everyone knows. I always play according to the situation, and I’m well aware of my strike rate.”
He further noted that critics often shift goalposts, demanding higher strike rates regardless of his performance, stating, “Sometimes, it’s perplexing as critics will argue my strike rate should be 170 when it’s 150, and if I play at a strike rate of 170, they’ll demand 200. Every player has their unique style and I refrain from comparisons.”
Despite the criticism, Babar has shown adaptability. For instance, in a 2023 PSL match, he smashed 115 off 65 balls at a strike rate of 177, addressing doubts about his ability to accelerate. His T20I record includes notable high-strike-rate knocks, such as a century off 49 balls against South Africa in 2021.
However, his recent performances, like scoring 22 off 17 balls in the 2025 National T20 Cup, have fueled further scrutiny, especially after being dropped from Pakistan’s T20I squad for the New Zealand series.
Supporters, including former players like Vivian Richards, back Babar, predicting a strong comeback, while critics like Basit Ali urge him to emulate players like Virat Kohli by focusing solely on batting.
Babar’s career T20 strike rate hovers around 130, with 4,223 runs in 128 matches at an average of 40, reflecting consistency but not always the explosiveness demanded in T20s. He acknowledges the evolving game but insists on playing to his strengths rather than chasing critics’ expectations.
